For as long as mankind can remember, special attributes have been given to all things extraterrestrial in origin. This has especially held true regarding anything that has formed as the result of a meteor-strike. While Moldavite has long-held its position as one the most powerful of impactites, a new scientific discovery may bring knowledge of a 'new', equally, if not more-powerful champion to the field. Libyan Desert Glass was formed by either a meteorite or comet impact, but no meteor craters exist (that can be detected by satellite) within a 150km distance of where it is found. No Libyan Desert Glass has been found at the nearest meteorite impact crater located in Libya, 150km to the west. Another peculiarity of Libyan Desert Glass, is its pattern of distribution, very elliptical in shape and roughly 130 km by 50 km in size. Libyan Desert Glass in and of itself is no new discovery, the scientific community has known of its existence since 1932. However, recently it was discovered that the meteor-strike that created it occurred in ancient Egypt, in the Gilf Kebir plateau, an area previously identified by researcher Philippe Paillou of the Observatoire Aquitain des Sciences de L'Univers to be the 'largest impact crater field on Earth'. The Strike occurred around 28,000,000 years ago (Moldavite by comparison is only 15,000,000 years-old). This meteor-strike created the Kebira crater, 20 times larger than the crater in Meteor Crater, Arizona. Now believed to be the largest impact on the planet, it was ironically the large size, and the fact that rivers ran through it and had eroded the basic crater-shape, that allowed it to go undiscovered for so long. While the surrounding sand and dunes have been roughly estimated to be 1,000,000 years old, the fission track dates of the Libyan Desert Glass have an average reading of 28,000,000 years, which was the method used to determine the age of the specimens collected from the fields. While it could not have been formed from the local exposed sandstone that exists there now, at the time period suggested by scientists, geologists estimate that at the time the existing sandstone was beneath 300m of limestone and covered with vegetation. The composition and structure of the glass are also consistent with the theory that the glass was formed from melted desert dune sand and cooled for over 24 hours in the Earth's atmosphere before being deposited in the Libyan desert. Libyan Desert Glass is almost pure silica- 98%, and its color varies from a pale straw-yellow to having hints of lighter green, depending on the light source and wavelength of the geological area it is being viewed in. For example: closer to the equator it reveals it light green hues, and the further from it you get, the more pale yellow it becomes. Frequently, brown streaking can be found and is of a material suggesting it to be meteorite dust. Some specimens have a pearlescent sheen, while others are fairly clear. Some are bicolor-color, and appearance can vary greatly from stone to stone. There is not a general geometric structure (that we are consciously aware of), formation is not in 'points' (as with quartz-based crystals), but chunks and pieces. They are naturally very shiny and smooth, from millions of years being polished by the shifting desert sands. The supply side on this material has dwindled to a trickle and recent reports indicate that expeditions into the field will either not be allowed at all or, at a minimum, will require that you hire an official Egyptian military escort to accompany you. Since the supply is limited (as with all impactites), it will only become increasingly difficult to find, in particular to locate quality specimens. While this 'discovery' may seem 'new' to us, it was known to hold special energetic values to the ancient Egyptians, and the scarab on King Tut's Breastplate -long thought to be Chalcedony- has recently been proven to in fact be Libyan Desert Glass. That it has been found in the Ancient Egyptians tombs is a great indicator of the value this particular substance held. While much ancient knowledge disappeared with the destruction of many key civilizations, humankind seems poised yet again to (re-) discover the value of this tool as it relates to energy work, and Individuals pursuing their path towards Growth, Reawakening, Ascension, Expansion and Enlightenment. Those who've worked with Libyan Desert Glass or have been exposed to it report similarities with Moldavite, which would be consistent with educated hypothesis of those familiar with and who work with impact glass or tektites, both of which fall under the somewhat broad definition of 'impactites'. Vivid dreaming, acceleration of energy and processes, communication and receipt of information from non-Earth-based entities, all these are to be expected. Considering the recent discovery and 'newness' of Libyan Desert Glass, this information is only the tip of the iceberg, and there is clearly much more to be discovered. When looking for Libyan Desert Glass specimens, 'Buyer Beware' seems to be the appropriate message to send. Many individuals on popular auction web sites have specimens that are scrap-junk at best, and have been wetted before being photographed, to hide the chips and flaws on the surface. (This is unfortunately frequent practice with many kinds of crystals and mineral specimens, not just Libyan Desert Glass). When purchasing a specimen that you are gauging from a photograph, make sure what you see is what you are getting, and that it hasn't been in any way pre-treated to camouflage defects. Extra caution is called for when purchasing any specimen which has been 'cut', 'faceted' or 'polished', as these are the easiest fakes to fall victim to, since one can no longer evaluate the surface of the original specimen for lines and etchings that would be much harder to duplicate. If you are fortunate enough to examine the pieces in person but are not energy sensitive (by this I mean able to pick up energy from crystals or similar objects simply by holding them), bringing someone along who can pick up on the energy could certainly be helpful. Unfortunately, it can be hard to find these rarities in any given local area, and we are often forced to go online to find our sources. With any new discovery, there are always people willing to exploit the enthusiasm in the market to obtain such a material, and we can also look to Moldavite to give us another perfect example of this. There was a flurry of activity regarding the 'Apple Green Moldavite' (As it was described on the E-bay web site), where the 'Moldavite' was actually made from pieces of melted down Chinese beer-bottles which had been tumbled! Exercise caution and take the time to get to know your supplier, and try to work with established and reputable individuals whenever possible. While most these scams are intentional, mistakes made by individuals who aren't knowledgeable in the field (despite how knowledgeable they may sound), are just as easily made. |
